The move comes as a study commissioned by Dropbox and released on Wednesday found workplace distractions were costing US companies nearly $US400 billion ($560 billion) in lost productivity. Under Dropbox's new policy, the company will bid farewell to personal desks and convert its offices into collaborative workspaces called Dropbox Studios, specifically designed for teamwork and group events. "Employees can use the allowance on whatever is most important to them so it might be a co-working space or it might be for wellness or fitness or things like caregiver support like nannies for working parents," Ms Collins said. Dropbox estimates the allowance will cost between $US6000 ($8371) and $US7000 per employee per year.Īlthough staff can no longer attend the office for solo work, they can use their allowance towards accessing co-working spaces such as WeWork. "It's meant to be a company-wide practice that enables us to break this pattern that we've been in of eight straight hours of Zoom calls a day. "It's more that we want to help employees draw boundaries between when meetings take place and when asynchronous work takes place so time for things like deep work. "This doesn't mean we're shortening our workdays to those four hours," Dropbox's global VP of people, Melanie Collins, said. Staff will be aligned to time zones within three regions: the Americas Europe and the Asia Pacific and Japan.
